Malmö Shows Why the Social Democrats Should Not Lead a Government

One of the people governing Malmö shared a post claiming that the world is controlled by “Satanic paedophiles”. If you follow the theory’s own logic, you have to wonder where she places herself and her colleagues. Do you learn that you are part of the global conspiracy when you take office as a municipal commissioner, or is it already written in the invitation to the first meeting?

The comedy ends rather quickly. Halimo Nuur Bashir Abdi is one of the Left Party’s municipal commissioners in Sweden’s third-largest city, responsible for disability support and human rights. According to Expressen’s investigation, she shared, among other things, a post claiming that the Epstein files prove this theory. She has said that she failed to scrutinise the material properly before sharing it. She has removed several posts and distanced herself from conspiracy theories. That answer hardly reassures me. How much scrutiny is really needed before stopping at the claim that a secret league of Satanic paedophiles controls the world? I expect better judgement from someone making decisions that affect the everyday lives of Malmö residents. The Left Party must explain why she, in particular, was given that trust.

At the same time, Nooshi Dadgostar is demanding ministerial posts. The Social Democrats, who govern Malmö together with the Left Party and the Green Party, want the prime minister’s office. Magdalena Andersson is welcome to explain what standards she sets for her partners. In Malmö, her party has already shown whom it is prepared to share power with. I wrote in October about the Left Party’s judgement when choosing its representatives. Then it concerned MP Mohamed Ali. I also raised the questions surrounding how he obtained Swedish citizenship after an earlier rejection. Now the issue is whom the Left Party gives power to in Malmö. How many times must the party explain its personnel choices after the fact? The Left Party Must Not Enter Government · Mohamed Ali’s citizenship

The Left Party has received the voters’ trust to represent them in parliament. A ministerial post requires others to be able to trust the party’s judgement as well. The Left Party still has much to prove on that score.

But the responsibility does not stop with the Left Party. As long as the Social Democrats invite reality-detached loose cannons into the innermost rooms of power, they show that they themselves lack the judgement required to lead a government. That applies in Malmö and it applies in Rosenbad.

If Ulf Kristersson fails, the Speaker should give the next mandate to explore a government to someone other than Magdalena Andersson. The Social Democrats have already shown in Malmö how they choose to share power. That is enough for me.
