The Left Party’s Red Lines Could Give Sweden a Right-Wing Government

Could the Left Party’s red lines pave the way for a centre-right government? And could the Centre Party become the decisive negotiator?

What political irony! The Sweden Democrats have now dropped their demand for ministerial posts to make a centre-right government possible, while the Left Party is sticking to its demand to be included in the government.

The Left Party’s own red lines could therefore help give Sweden a right-wing government.

At the same time, the Centre Party has gained a golden negotiating position. If the party chooses to return to the centre-right camp, it can make far-reaching demands about the policies to be pursued. But the question of the Sweden Democrats’ influence must then also be resolved.

The Left Party, meanwhile, risks becoming the big loser. In its pursuit of ministerial posts, it may lose the opportunity for political influence.

The Sweden Democrats could also benefit from this development. Outside government, they avoid ministerial responsibility for the compromises and can try to return stronger at the next election.

But perhaps the biggest winners of all will be the Swedish people!

Imagine a government in which neither the Left Party, the Green Party nor the Sweden Democrats has decisive influence—a government that seeks solutions closer to the political centre.

Not even an optimist like me would have dared to dream of such a scenario.

But now I actually dare to start dreaming.
